- How do you describe what you do when meeting new people?
I help organisations to understand risk and improve their performance through the proactive management of risk and opportunity
- How did you find yourself in this line of work?
I started out my career as a Chemical Engineer and moved into Project Management. The management of risk and opportunity is embedded in good project management so moving into a consulting role in this area became a natural progression.
- Who is your professional role model, and why?
Richard Branson. He is not constrained by risk – he embraces opportunity, understands the risks and finds the right balance.
- What is the project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career?
There are a few, but one of the first was bringing my first project in ahead of schedule, with no compromise on quality and with significant cost savings for the company. Without realising it at the time, my natural instinct was to plan ahead, look at what may stop us delivering and put strategies in place to manage the “uncertainty”. These strategies not only managed the risk, but led to opportunities to complete ahead of schedule.
- How would you explain ‘being risk averse’ to someone?
One of my favourite quotes is “risk nothing; risk everything” – but for those that are naturally risk averse then this does not come easily. That’s where risk management comes in. It gives you a much better understanding of how you can control the risks, move beyond the “analysis paralysis” and take the opportunity.
